Frank Miller: Ranking His Comics From Worst To Best
12. The Man Without Fear (1993-94)
After years of writing Daredevil, Miller returned for a miniseries that would come to redefine the origin of the hero for modern readers. A five-part run with artist John Romita Jr. was the result, a tale focused on the painful years Matt Murdock spent grappling with ways to fight injustice. The Man Without Fear is not as taut as Miller's other superhero origin revamp (stay tuned€) but is nonetheless a well-paced expansion on a myth that had until that time been drawn quite thin. As stated by fellow WhatCulture writer Mark Ginocchio in his excellent rundown of Daredevil/Kingpin storylines, part of Miller's genius was in realising that gangster Wilson Fisk is the perfect antagonist for Matt Murdock. The Man Without Fear manages to incorporate Fisk from the very beginning, showing that Daredevil was always destined to struggle against the Kingpin despite not meeting him face-to-face for years to come.
