Let's be honest - most folks are perfectly content with the Lethal Weapon franchise concluding with its so-so fourth entry, which was released all the way back in 1998.

Regardless, Lethal Weapon 5 has been in some form of development since around 2007, and in 2020, franchise director Richard Donner confirmed that he would return to direct the series-capping Lethal Finale.

However, Donner died the next year, with Gibson then replacing him to direct from a screenplay penned by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back).

Donner's death really feels like the ultimate indication that everyone involved waited too long to get this one off the ground, and when you additionally consider Mel Gibson's present radioactivity in the industry - resulting in Lethal Finale being a direct-to-streaming sequel - it's easy to believe that this is coming decades too late.

It needed to get made when Donner was still alive and Gibson still had some measure of mainstream standing in Hollywood.
