Casey Becker's (Drew Barrymore) demise in the original Scream is so brilliantly iconic and subversive that it's easy to forget she actually isn't the first character to die in Wes Craven's seminal slasher flick.

First up on the gutting block is Casey's poor boyfriend Steve (Kevin Patrick Walls), only after which a terrified Casey attempts to flee the house and is intercepted by Ghostface, who brutally stabs and disembowels her, before hanging her from a tree to be discovered by her horrified parents.

Beyond the suspenseful brilliance of Casey's fateful phone call with the killer, her death mischievously toyed with expectations, introducing us to a character who in any other slasher would be the protagonist - played by the most high-profile cast member and all - only to brutally off her mere minutes afterwards.

Above all else, it assured the audience that this wasn't your typical slasher flick, and that going forward nobody would be safe from Ghostface's blade.
