10 Classic Movies We Need To See In IMAX

7. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

This is one of those decisions that simply makes marketing sense, when you consider that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is arriving in cinemas in just a short number of months, so why not re-release the Best Picture-winning, massively acclaimed finale to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings series? Though the CGI was at times inconsistent, there are few takes that can live up to the sheer scale of Jackson's adaptation of J. R. R. Tolein's novels; Peter Jackson has crafted a technical near-masterpiece that opened the floodgates for pop culture to be seriously recognised at the Academy Awards, and for that, above all else, he should be recognised.

It's indisputable that the film suits an IMAX projection; the insane scale, the immaculate effects, the raw emotion; it all builds to a fantastic - if somewhat distended - crescendo, that would surely get fans right in the mood for Jackson's impending Hobbit trilogy, if only studio execs have the foresight to get this one moving, which we doubt.
