If you say the name James Gunn nowadays, you'll get a whole host of reactions, mainly focussed on his time in the world of superheroes. His Guardians of the Galaxy movies and recent project, The Suicide Squad, have turned Gunn into one of Hollywood's most popular and sought-after filmmakers. So, the fact that so few people talk about his debut movie is a real shame.

Slither takes place in the small town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, as an alien parasite crash lands and begins to overtake the location. It does so by infecting the townsfolk and turning them into mindless zombies/mutants, and it's up to the three surviving inhabitants to bring it down.

The movie is an absolute treat, as it's designed to be a homage to B-movies, thus is full of the gross, hilarious and goofy clichés of the genre. Still, rather than feeling derivative, you can sense Gunn's love and passion for the style and history of B-movies, making the film a delight to sit through.

However, one thing to note is that it's not the easiest movie to sit through if you have a weak stomach.
