10 Great Superman Stories That Could Save The DCEU

6. Must There Be A Superman?

Superman Man Of Steel
DC Comics

This 1967 story is rather brief compared to the more sprawling multi-issue arcs on this list, but it is one of the more contemplative stories to feature the Man of Steel in a leading role.

Following an intergalactic rescue of an alien pod, Superman is taken to Oa by the Guardians of the Universe and shown that his rescues are interfering with humanity's natural progress through time.

Shaken to the core, the hero makes his way back and reevaluates his role in human history. He comes to a conclusion following the rescue of laborers in California and realizes that he should intervene in large scale disasters beyond human control and leave more morally driven issues to humanity.

The idea of questioning Superman's role in the world has been done before in cinema, but an adaptation of this storyline would further explore that question. It would also give the Man of Steel a chance to reflect on his (admittedly self-appointed) role as Earth's protector in a way we haven't seen on the big screen quite the same.
