4. Strong Leading Characters

Both Lorne Green in the original series and Edward James Olmos in the re-imagined series dominated the show, while still being surrounded by excellent supporting casts. Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin, Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck, Richard Hatch as Apollo/Tom Zarek and Dirk Benedict (also as Starbuck) are just a small selection of the excellent acting talent on display.

For any new version of BSG to stand out, the filmmakers should bear in mind that both previous incarnations have offered iconic science fiction characters. This should not be a detterant in any way - but there should be consideration paid to how the film will add to the conversation, when it comes to the characters on display.

Perhaps the single best discovery, from either series, is Tricia Helfer's Six. She has become the face of BSG while also displaying a thundering amount of talent. While it is fair to bear in mind that the production shouldn't necessarily be looking for 'the next Six' and yet to ignore the impact of that character would be foolish.

If the script ends up with paper thin characters and lots of explosions - there simply is no point in making a film called Battlestar Galactica.
