10 Upcoming Films Starring Doctor Who Actors You Have To See

3. Lost River (Matt Smith)

Here he is again! And this will be the last time he appears on this list, too. Promise. Matt Smith broke the heart of the entire nation when he announced that he'd be leaving Doctor Who on Christmas Day (of all days!) back in 2013 and, after serving as the universe's coveted defender for three and a half years, it was safe to say that the world was his oyster. Rather unsurprisingly then, it didn't take him long (like, at all) to be handpicked by a Hollywood icon to star as 'Bully' in a highly publicised fantasy thriller, then named How to Catch a Monster, but Matt has now probably all but given up on the hope of his post-Who big break taking the form of Ryan Gosling's ill-fated directorial debut. The film was panned - as in, literally booed - by critics when it was premiered at last year's prestigious Cannes Festival and attempts to increase appeal by renaming it to Lost River weren't enough to convince any company to invest in its mainstream cinematic distribution. Don't let that put you off, though, because audiences will finally get to see it for themselves this spring when it gets its limited theatrical release. Despite what the teaser would suggest (he doesn't get much of a look in in the full-length trailer), Matt probably does a lot more than just ride around on the roof of a car and order everyone to look at his muscles. You won't know until you see it for yourself, though, so don't judge a book by its cover and all that. You never know, it might just surprise you...
