11 Best Recast Movie Roles Of All Time
8. Maggie Gyllenhaal As Rachel Dawes
If there's a weak spot in Nolan's first Bat-film, 2005's Batman Begins, it's the ridiculous 'flash-cutting' during the action sequences. But if there's a weak spot in the cast, it's Katie Holmes performance as Rache Dawes.
Holmes doesn't give a bad performance per se, but she also doesn't give a good one. It's a weak and monotonously one-note role that Holmes never really does anything with. And while she might have been able to get away with it in a different film, in Batman Begins, she's surrounded by high caliber actors such as Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, and Michael Caine. All of whom, are delivering top-notch work.
So when the sequel came around and Holmes declined to return, it was a win-win situation. Maggie Gyllenhaal stepped into the role and the film is all the better for it. Gyllenhaal's version of Rachel has more charm and vigor in her opening scene than Holmes' version could have ever dreamt of.
Considering the fact that Rachel meets her untimely demise in The Dark Knight, audiences are even luckier the switch was made. Holmes would never have been able to elicit the same reaction in her final moments as Gyllenhaal so beautifully does.
