12 Movies With Way Happier Endings Than You'd Ever Expect
9. Reign Over Me
It's very easy to forget how great an actor Adam Sandler is. Among his absurdly horrible Netflix comedy films where he mugs at the camera, films that show him in a more serious role often get sidetracked.
Reign Over Me is a film all about grief and friendship with a broader stroke of mental health issues extending all the way across. For Adam Sandler, he plays Charlie, a man who lost his wife and daughters in the September 11th attacks. Some time has passed, and Charlie reunites with his old college friend Alan, played by Don Cheadle.
At times the film makes you forget the tragedy that befell Charlie, but it's the constant reminders of Alan and Charlie's grieving in-laws that progress the tension of the film. Charlie's aggressive insistence not to bring up his lost family is a brewing tension pot and it all comes to a head when he puts himself and those around him in physical danger.
The ending of the film sees Charlie acknowledge and purge some of his grief. As he comes to terms with what happened, he starts to rebuild and move forward. Meanwhile, Alan relearns to appreciate his wife and marriage, something he took for granted.
