15 Massive Movie Franchises That Have More Great Entries Than Rubbish Ones
7. A Nightmare On Elm Street
Total Number of Films: 9
Great: A Nightmare on Elm Street, A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge, A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Freddy Vs Jason
Rubbish: A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 4: The Dream Master, A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 5: The Dream Child, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010 remake)
It's only by a very thin margin that the iconic 80s slasher franchise makes the grade here; as you can see, the good only just outweighs the bad. No doubt many will dispute the inclusion of the notorious first sequel, Freddy's Revenge, among the best of the series, as many regard it the worst; an unfair dismissal of an interesting and entertaining film, in my opinion.
Still, if we're talking enduring franchises, it would hardly seem right not to mention A Nightmare on Elm Street. Robert Englund's pizza-faced dream demon Freddy Krueger was one of the biggest pop culture icons of the 1980s, and in many respects this proved the franchise's downfall; you can't really find a guy too scary once you've seen him rapping with The Fat Boys.
While 2003's Freddy Vs Jason gave Englund an enjoyable swansong, his worthy successor Jackie Earle Haley never had much of a chance to shine in 2010's abysmal reboot from Platinum Dunes. Here's hoping we get something better from New Line Cinema's planned re-reboot (if that's a thing now).
