14. GETT: The Trial Of Viviane Amsalem

Rotten Tomatoes: 100% From 66 Reviews It's almost inevitable that GETT spell-bound critics at Cannes; it's loaded with political allegory, gender issues and familial tension and on the surface it appears entirely uncinematic. But as the divorce trial unfolds in perverse fashion, with film-makers Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz compellingly presenting the ridiculously stacked process, its worthiness as a story that needs to be told becomes infinitely clear. For a lot of people this will be the entry point to revisit the rest of this trilogy, which explores issues of gender inequality and male domination, and that's undoubtedly a good thing. It (and the trilogy) sways between grim intensity and bitter comedy, never relying on spectacle and allowing the excellent script and a great performance by Ronit Elkabetz to shine brightest. Sample Review:
"The divorce-centered drama is so provocative it's become a lightning rod for debate inside the country. Even watching from a distance is unnerving." - Betsy Sharkey, LA Times
