17. K-Pop Demon Hunters - How It's Done
K-Pop Demon Hunters is a cultural phenomenon that absolutely deserved to be one. It is a genuinely brilliant film and a true work of art; this first set-piece - featuring the tune 'How it's Done' - establishes that right from the get-go.
In film pre-production, the phrase 'Statement of Intent' is often used to describe a teaser or short that's designed to get funding for a feature. For example, Whiplash was a short film at first, then that one's success allowed Damian Chazelle to get funding for the feature. Well, this opening functions a bit like that, in that it displays everything that made this movie so special wrapped up into a few glorious minutes.
Some of the most beautiful and creative animation in recent memory, sly humour, clearly-drawn characters and a dynamite fight scene choreographed to an earworm of a track... this has it all and then some. As the titular trio of pop-stars use their music to battle demons on their tour plane, no-one will be able to look away and they wouldn't want to either. It's a hymn to the power of music, a reminder of what the medium of animation can really do and it's, in general, a scene that's like a shot of adrenaline right into the vein.
This is how it's done, indeed.
