50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2023
46. The Exorcist
As wildly divisive as David Gordon Green's recent Halloween trilogy was, it's difficult not to be at least somewhat intrigued by his next project - a direct sequel to William Friedkin's The Exorcist.
Given that the majority of the Exorcist sequels, prequels, and spin-offs haven't been much good - save for the criminally underrated Exorcist III - Green isn't exactly throwing much beloved material out of the window.
It remains to be seen whether or not Green can deliver something that expands upon the Exorcist mythology in a compelling way, but given that 90-year-old Ellen Burstyn will reprise her Chris McNeil role from the original, the curiosity is certainly there.
With the great Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd leading the main cast, hopefully Green will turn in something a bit less polarising than his Halloween films.
The Exorcist releases on October 13.
45. Red One
The Rock didn't have the best 2022 - DC League of Super-Pets and Black Adam both failed to set the box office on fire, and he recently confirmed that Black Adam 2 won't be going ahead.
But Johnson's nothing if not an industrious talent, and he's already several months into shooting his next blockbuster.
Red One is a Christmas-themed action-adventure film starring Johnson and Chris Evans as the amusingly-monikered characters Callum Drift and Jack O’Malley.
Little concrete about the plot has been revealed yet, though the film is apparently attempting to reimagine holiday mythology through the lens of an epic, mega-budget blockbuster.
Jumanji filmmaker Jake Kasdan directs a script from The Fast and the Furious' Chris Morgan, while the cast also includes Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, J. K. Simmons, Nick Kroll, and Kristofer Hivju.
If nothing else, it'll sure be fun to see Johnson and Evans riffing off one another while kicking ass and taking names. Amazon is also eyeing it as a potential franchise depending on how it performs.
Red One releases on Amazon in late 2023.
