5. District 9 (2009)
Dealing with the issues of xenophobia, social segregation and humanity, Neill Blomkamps District 9 was a visually and compelling piece of film-making. This was a stunning surprise for critics and audiences alike. Depicting the story about a society of aliens referred by the humans as Prawns are confined to a government camp outside Johannesburg called District 9. The film followed Wikus (Sharlto Copley) an ill-mannered manager of a department of alien affairs, who when raiding an aliens slum discovers and seizes a canister, which he accidentally sprays onto his face. The fluid begins to slowly mutate Wikus, beginning with his left arm. Wikus then takes refuge in District 9 where his body continues to transform much to his shock and horror. Interestingly, Wikus whom at the beginning of the film is both merciless and in-human, through this transformation grows to show signs of having sympathy and sentimentality towards the Prawns and their desperation, thus making him more human.
