9 Upcoming Movies That Could Be Franchise Killers

7. Rings

Samara The Ring
Universal Pictures

The American remake of The Ring made Naomi Watts a star back in 2002, the 2005 sequel made her swear off horror movies and now the long-delayed third movie is almost here, a good decade after the J-horror craze ended. The concept of people dying through a cursed VHS tape probably doesn’t strike much fear into the hearts of jaded millennials either, so part three really has an uphill struggle ahead.

The new movie has a bunch of college kids stupidly daring each other to watch the tape, and one of them discovers they’ve got less than a day to rid themselves of the curse; they can’t even return the tape to the video shop now. While the original films, at least, focused on adult heroes Rings will instead have a bunch of annoying teens driving the story, and the image of a lank-haired ghost girl coming through the screen no longer holds the nightmare fuel potential it once did.

The movie has already been delayed a bunch of times due to the studio's lack of confidence in it, so don’t be stunned if Rings is the last instalment of the series for a long time.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
