Avengers: Endgame - 10 Huge Controversies Nobody Saw Coming

1. "Fat Thor"

Fat Thor generated a helluva lot of controversy, seeming to have as many fans as critics; although perhaps it’s just that the critics were louder.

First off, it’s not cool to laugh at someone who’s overweight, especially if it’s caused by depression. But are we ever really invited to? The first time we meet Thor, there’s a shock, and with that comes humour, but the scene doesn’t leave it at that. It shows Thor’s anger and fear at the name Thanos, as well as his new depressed lifestyle.

Right from the start, we’re shown that this overeating is a symptom of deep unhappiness.

War Machine jokes about Thor when he had previously been comforting about Tony’s PTSD, but just watch Thor in that scene. It hurts him, and it’s undeniably realistic that some friends will poke fun at overeating rather than try and help.

Most importantly, Thor is still worthy enough for Mjolnir, can still fight like hell and doesn’t just drop the weight instantly at the end of the movie.

With his redemption earned, he may well lose it before or during Guardians 3, but the MCU probably deserves the benefit of the doubt that they’ll handle it well.
