16. X-Men: Dark Phoenix

X Men Ranking
20th Century Fox

As the final film in Fox's new timeline series, there was a lot riding on Dark Phoenix especially following the studio's previous attempt at the Dark Phoenix saga.

Unfortunately, what started as a great revamp of the franchise, it fizzled out with a lackluster fourth installment. In hindsight, the First Class era of films could have ended as a trilogy and remained a semi-respectable addition to the X-Men name. But Fox just had to go and try and do Dark Phoenix again.

Admittedly, the studio did attempt to include the space aspect of the Phoenix Force but it came across as convoluted and messy. Not only was this story still fresh in the minds of many X-Men fans but the trailers gave away every surprise the film had to offer.

On top of that, most of the characters make dumb decisions for the sake of plot and regularly contradict themselves. Take for example what many saw as the main mishandling is that of Magneto who gives Jean a long speech of how revenge is never the answer given his experience and then immediately declares revenge on Jean when Mystique is killed. Great writing.

It's far from the only issue, of course, but it's a jarring one. And the problems should come as no surprise if you look into the production that saw the whole end of the movie thrown out and restarted. That's never a recipe for success.
