How Matt Reeves' Batman Movie Should Be Made
1. Make It A Love Story
Though the horror genre is a great place to look to in conveying the perennial nightmare Gotham City offers, it's important to remember that Batman is, at his core, still just a man. Bruce Wayne is just as important as the cape and cowl, and while it's a difficult balancing act to get right, any film that does so will be much better for it.
The Dark Knight's love life has been broached in pretty much every Batman film going, but where before they only featured on the peripheries of the main narrative, this next Bat-film should endeavour to make it a core feature. There have been countless women that have captured Bruce Wayne's heart in the comics, but by far the most brilliant has been Selina Kyle, the on again, off again cat burglar who simply can't stay away from Gotham.
The romance between the two characters has been a key feature in the comics as of late, and with the pair set to marry later this year, now's as good a time as any to spotlight their union and go all in on a Batman story that makes both characters the most important things in it. (Rebecca Ferguson, by the way, would make a perfect Selina Kyle.)
Batman's human element has been lost in translation in his most recent adaptations, with the DCEU opting to depict a more mythical interpretation of the character akin to the force of nature depicted in Miller's comics, and the Nolan films having shifted attention squarely on the symbolism of the hero over the personal motivations of Bruce Wayne as a protagonist. That has to change sooner or later, and if this new Batman film can portray those human elements first and foremost - as Batman's greatest stories have - then it could be the character's finest cinematic outing yet.
