And part of the issue with Cavill's vocal performance is the fact the script is just sort of not that great at all. The story is a great excuse for some stunning action and the tension is absolutely there, but when it comes to the dialogue it's either too cheesy or too rote and could well be believable as T-shirt slogans.

The melodrama in there - which has been brought in as means to anchor Ethan Hunt emotionally it seems (and to address the fact that he misplaced a whole-ass woman a few films ago) - is on a par with when Michael Bay tries to write relatable human relationships. In other words, the sugar content is massive and it's not really all that satisfying.

Luckily, the whole thing is so bloody brutally brilliant that you can absolutely forgive the lack of nuance and plot subtlety and even the clunking dialogue. And in itself, that's really quite an achievement.

And now on to the positives?
