Paul W.S. Anderson’s Films Ranked From Worst To Best
2. Mortal Kombat
Super Mario Bros was the very first video game movie, and set the tone for things to come. It was an ugly, obnoxious adventure that took the colourful world of the game, and turned it into a crappy Blade Runner rip-off. Anderson’s Mortal Kombat movie followed shortly after, and thankfully was way more fun.
The famous gore of the game had to left out – that pesky PG-13 rating reared its ugly head – but it makes up for it with sheer energy. The fight scenes are great fun, the techno soundtrack is gloriously dated and it wisely tells a contained story, instead of just jamming the famous characters from the game into it; a lesson the terrible sequel ignored.
The heroes are also a fun bunch to hang out with and while it’s hardly sophisticated entertainment, it’s held up quite well over the last two decades.
