Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 8 Big Questions We Have After The Trailer

6. Will Kylo Ren Actually Kill Leia?

Midway through the trailer we’re shown glimpses of a space battle, with Kylo Ren skillfully piloting a ship through the destruction around him.

Over this action, the line “let the past die… kill it. If you have to. That’s the only way to become what you were meant to be”, can be heard, before his ship locks onto a target - General Leia, his mother.

It looks like Kylo is about to send his mum off to meet his dad - but is this moment all that it seems? Is the possibility of Leia dying in Episode VIII even on the table?

At this point, it’s not clear whether the character will appear in Episode IX. Mark Hamill recently made several comments indicating that she will be, but in May, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that Carrie Fisher won’t appear.

So, since it’s not clear whether Leia will appear in Episode IX or not, she could very well meet her maker in The Last Jedi, at the hands of her son.

But then… there are a few other points to consider.

Kylo Ren killed one of his parents in the last movie - wouldn't for him to do so again make the movie's writing just a little bit… predictable? Uninspired? Could killing Leia off, no matter the cause, be considered disrespectful to Carrie Fisher’s memory?

Also, look carefully at those shots of Leia - specifically, the people in the background. Do those people look panicked, or stressed? Do they look like they’re under attack? No. They’re all just walking around. These shots could be from a completely different scene.

Based on that evidence alone, it seems like this scene won’t be the end of Leia, but whether or not she dies later in the movie remains to be seen.
