10 Iconic Video Game Franchises That Can't Catch A Break

5. Mass Effect

The original two Mass Effect games are some of the most respected and praised Sci-Fi RPG video games to date, and many would consider them to be some of Bioware's best work. The games were able to balance superb world building with gameplay that really made it feel like each play through could be entirely unique, with choices from the first game having potential repercussions all the way into Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect 3 is where things started to go wrong however. DLC was released that was core to the story which made players feel cheated, having crucial content locked behind a paywall. There was also the large controversy about the ending that actually lead to a free patch that tried to improve on some of the downfalls. But it wasn't really enough, and many remember Mass Effect 3 as being a disappointing finale. This didn't end Mass Effect though.

Mass Effect: Andromeda however, may have just been the final nail in the coffin. The game launched with a plethora of bugs that really hurt the game's reputation, leading to many not even picking it up. Which sucks, because the combat had never been better! While the story was definitely weaker and felt less unique to each player, it was by no means bad. But many fans just didn't see that.

It seems like the poor reception was just a bit too much for the series, as no continuation has been announced despite there clearly being plans for at least one sequel.
