10 Infuriating Video Game Levels You Forgot You Hated
8. Max Payne - Blood Trails
Two incredible instalments and one weirder one thanks to Rockstar taking over the reigns, Max Payne's first game was an explosive debut on new hardware, showing off things like Bullet Time that The Matrix was also now synonymous with, as well as having developers Remedy kick out a fantastic story that ticked every box imaginable for a grizzled film noir cop getting his revenge.
Something that completely derailed the experience were the levels set inside Max's mind, seeing him haunted by the death of his child - although the way this played out in-game was to have you literally running, in the pitch black, as you followed a tiny blood trail across the floor.
Stepping just one way or the other meant instant death and a restart, and these levels went on and on and on all the while Max's screaming baby gnawed away at your sanity levels. Maybe the point was to reduce you to a flickering edge-of-reality mess like Max, but it's more likely this was just a bad idea executed on even worse.
