10 Things Open-World Games Need To STOP DOING

4. Forced Grinding

Let's paint a picture every open-world gamer has experienced at some point or another: Running through a main storyline, encountering a boss they need to clear to progress, only to be absolutely crushed when they attempt it.

What invariably follows is having to go back and boost your level, stats, attributes etc. through mindless grinding until you reach a point where you're far stronger than the game expects you to be. That is assuming you even have the patience to stick with something for that long.

And what makes this whole sequence even more annoying is how often these challenging encounters are the only means of progressing forward, and how often a game will trap the player into taking them on after they reach a certain point.

When they are inevitably owned by the enemy at far too high a level, players are forced to load an old save before committing to the hours of grinding needed to get through.

Some developers have begun to introduce 'Battle Speed' mechanics that allow players to speed through the grind much quicker and, honestly, this sort of feature should be a mainstay in every open-world game going forward.
