10 Things Ubisoft Wants You To Forget
6. Losing The Accounts Of 58 Million Players
It's always embarrassing when big companies suffer a huge security breach, however it's another thing entirely when they compromise the accounts of 58 million people.
When you sign up to services offered by anyone - let alone a game developer or publisher - it's in the good faith that, you know, your details won't be sold off or be readily available to whatever chancer tries their hand at hacking into the database. Unfortunately this happened to Ubisoft in 2013, and while it wasn't one of the more high profile security breaches involving a gaming company (Sony probably still holds that record), it was a huge mark on the company.
They promised that no credit-card data had been compromised and urged users to simply switch up their passwords following the breach, but still, despite nobody being financially impacted by the controversy, it still damaged the trust people put in Ubi as a company.
Fortunately nothing has happened on that scale since (a surprise, considering just how terrible the majority of their online services actually are), and the incident has been all but completely swept under the rug.
