10 Things You Didn't Know About Heavy Rain

6. Madison Also Had A Unique Gameplay Mechanic, Which Was Scrapped

Rubbing further salt into the wound of Madison being reduced to highly sexualised victim is the knowledge of scrapped gameplay segments in which she got to do things other than take her clothes off. Most significant was the newspaper she worked for - their office was originally to be a major set piece that was revisited multiple times throughout the game. Here, the player would be able to have Madison dig through archives and carry out research on the Origami Killer, and write articles which could contribute to later gameplay events.

This would have lent an open ended and interestingly procedural element to certain segments of an otherwise relatively linear game. To add to this, the office would have allowed Madison to interact with other characters who didn't want to mutilate her, allowing her aforementioned backstory and personality to be fleshed out. Alas, these were scrapped for slowing the game down, much like Ethan's nightmare sequences, and we ended up with Madison Paige we all know and hate - running away in various stages of undress from creepy dudes with power tools.
