8. No One Ever Fastens A Seat Belt
As game worlds continue to get bigger and more expansive, developers have to find ways for players to quickly get from point to point. While mechanics like fast travel are becoming more standard in open world games, another easy solution is to let players zip around city streets in cars.
Whether it's modern American cities in Grand Theft Auto, historic metropolises in the Mafia series, or the sci-fi cityscapes of Crackdown, driving is a core mechanic in so many games. Being a regular part of modern life, though, it's somewhat strange that none of these games have included arguably the most common feature about cars: seat belts.
Having to press an extra button to buckle-up a seat belt may take some of the excitement out of a high-speed getaway or inject a little too much mundanity into hijacking an expensive supercar, but the option wouldn't go amiss. Considering GTA V let's you lower the roofs of convertibles, the addition of a seat belt doesn't seem too far afield.
If players chose the sensible option of proper road safety, it could stop their characters from dying in horrific traffic accidents. But, on the other hand, seeing them catapaulted through the windscreen never gets old.
