10 Video Game DLCs That Burned Their Fanbase
3. Burial At Sea - Bioshock Infinite
This is likely to sound like a massively personal gripe, but there is still a point to be made about how Bioshock Infinite's Burial At Sea DLC fatally undermines the incredibly powerful story that Bioshock Infinite presented and neatly wrapped up. While the Rapture-set expansion plays well and looks incredible, it's also a piece of cynical fanservice that downplays the sacrifices of Infinite's characters in order to tie in with the plot of the original Bioshock.
Bioshock Infinite's plotline is a little confusing and, admittedly, not watertight. However, everything is brought together perfectly in its final moments where - spoiler warning - protagonist Booker DeWitt makes the decision to be drowned at a certain point in time in order to prevent all the wrongs he will commit. All timelines and all parallels are erased.
Then Burial At Sea happens and retcons Infinite's ending, revealing that one Elizabeth remained and has been chasing down remaining Bookers - who, according to Infinite's ending, had all been wiped out. The DLC then proceeds to see the characters killed in a plot that leads up to Jack's arrival in Rapture. Booker's sacrifice is meaningless, and it's all ultimately to serve a character with the personality of a piece of driftwood.
