10 Video Games You Can't Explain Without Sounding Like A Psychopath
6. Grand Theft Auto
Good luck explaining: That torture scene in GTA V. One of the most obvious entries on any of these lists, there's no bigger dartboard for mainstream press scare-tactic arrows in the history of gaming. Although last year's GTA V managed to pretty much go under the radar in a move that saw regular haters take one look at that opening billion-dollar weekend before throwing their hands up and saying "Okay fine! We give up!" the other entries in the series weren't so lucky. However it doesn't matter which one you pick, the core appeal outside of the campaign missions is always the same; "How much death, destruction and carnage can I get away with before being caught?" Which of course leads to the same answer with each release - "Quite a lot, in fact." Enough to be worrying you might say, but that's more subjective than we're going to delve into. The thing that Rockstar has yet to do in a convincing way in any of the GTA games is give us a protagonist we genuinely root for throughout every mission, with a motivation that's relatable. GTA IV's Niko meant well, but ended up getting dragged into so many morally-questionable situations it went against everything he appeared to stand for, whereas Trevor was crafted from the brain-stained boot up to be as nigh-on reprehensible as possible. For all the things the franchise does better than anyone else, it doesn't mean there's not room for improvement when it comes to the reasons why we play them in the first place.
