10 Video Games Everyone Loves To Hate (That Totally Don't Deserve It)
7. Batman: Arkham Origins
The Consensus:"Warner Bros. are just cashing in on the Arkham name", "No Rocksteady? No thanks"
The Truth: *Dons Morpheus glasses* What if I told you, Batman: Arkham Origins is the best Arkham game after Asylum?
It sounds crazy, right? Thing is, Origins suffered immensely from franchise fatigue (to the point where we talk about the series as a trilogy, and even Rocksteady didn't acknowledge its existence in the Arkham Knight credits-wrap), however, this is a game that delves into the Batman/Joker dynamic with actual depth, not just the "Here he is again" way that Rocksteady repeatedly fell back on.
If Rocksteady's treatment of the character is a pounding heavy metal song, WB Montreal's is an elegant instrumental. Case in point: The level where you play as Joker himself, delving into his mind as writers Corey May, Dooma Wendschuh and Ryan Gallett flesh out a relationship to Batman that would go on to define both of them forever.
We also see Bruce Wayne becoming Batman, which if you've ever read something like Year One or like the dynamism and reality of The Dark Knight Returns, is a very interesting way to spin a tale about the Bat in game form.
Thanks to being cranked out by the Warner Bros. money machine, Origins felt like them going back to the well without the permission or even blessing of original developers Rocksteady, but the actual feel of the game overall (and Troy Baker's pitch-perfect Joker) excel in many ways I still think are far better than the establoshed 'Arkham trilogy'.
