A reboot/remake of C&C would almost certainly have to be PC-only, as the strategy genre is one that has never been able to be successfully implemented on consoles. Even though the originals were available on PlayStation, and more recent entries such as Red Alert 3 were released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, trying to select units and command them with a control pad was always awkward at best, making a mouse and keyboard configuration the best way to play.

1995’s Command & Conquer (later subtitled Tiberian Dawn) almost single-handedly brought strategy games into the mainstream, with the two distinct factions catering to different styles of play and the streamlined resource-gathering and technology tree ensured a steady drip-feed of new toys for players to wage war.

Red Alert, Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 built and expanded on the original, eventually diving head-first into borderline-ridiculous war machines and troops including tanks disguised as trees, psychic soldiers and intelligent squids.

The series arguably peaked with Yuri’s Revenge, the 2001 expansion pack for Red Alert 2, with later entries struggling to maintain a foothold amongst other strategy giants such as Starcraft and Dawn of War.

The older games, however, are still remembered fondly, and a return to form would surely be welcomed with open arms.
