10 Ways To Make Sure The Call Of Duty Movie Doesn't Suck
6. Try To Adapt The Gameplay In An Organic Way
One of the tricky things about adapting a videogame is how to translate the experience of playing the game. Its not easy to take a medium designed for interaction and turn it into a passive one. Some past attempts like Max Payne have tried to stay faithful to the story or characters instead of translating the gameplay experience, which doesnt work either as the story wasnt all that compelling to start with. While its definitely a challenge, that doesnt mean its impossible. A recent example is the non-videogame movie Edge Of Tomorrow, which managed to recreate the experience of playing a game while still feeling like a real movie. It was about an inexperienced soldier who kept being brought back to life to fight a chaotic battle, until his skills and reflexes get good enough to defeat. It had training sections, boss battles, respawns and an on-the-rail section sewn into a narrative about characters the audience actually cared about. Other successful game logic movies including The Raid, Inception and even The Matrix. So it can be done. They just need to avoid watching Elysium for inspiration.
