In possibly the most barmy plot setup yet - though floating pirate Bowser lifting Peach's Castle and disappearing off into space in Mario Galaxy was pretty 'out there' - now Mario has come across a 'ghost hat' named Cappy, who'll let him possess almost anything.

People, street signs, T-Rexes - you name it, you can stick your hat on it, sprout a moustache and control it.

In the demo - which we still have no idea what the plot is - Mario is seen leaping into tanks to fire off shells, twang himself across cityscapes by embodying bendy poles and lampposts and of course, leaping on the heads of anything else that gets in the way.

It looks like one of the most mechanically experimental Marios in years, and for that alone, you just know Nintendo have many more tricks up their sleeve between now and October.
