14 Most Memorable Closing Lines In Video Game History

3. "Consider Yourself A Hero." - Contra

Konami's Contra is one of the true gems for the NES, but not for its incredible story or fantastic gameplay. Instead, it is the unforgiving and uncaring difficulty of the game that has lead to its immense popularity and wide legacy, which has been past downed through the game's line of sequels. Not only was it the game to beat when it came out, but it was also the reason for many gamers to learn the famous Konami Code (even though it originated in the fellow Konami game Graduis). Getting to the end of the game is no easy feat, and the title's final message almost makes fun of the difficulty in reaching the conclusion. With players dying in one hit no matter what touches them as projectiles and traps riddle the screen, getting to the game's final boss is more than just a challenge. After finally taking it down, the game provides a long epilogue describing the aftermath of the game's events, ending with the message that the player should "consider" themselves a hero. With all the skill and preciseness that is involved just beating the first level, for the player to "consider" themselves a hero is almost an insult to their massive quest. While it could be seen as a compliment, it is definitely not enough to commemorate the player's accomplishments.
