Numbers don't lie: Grand Theft Auto is one of the most lucrative video game properties of all time. In fact, Grand Theft Auto 5 made $1 billion in the first three days of its release alone, which consequently makes it one of the most successful entertainment properties to have ever been released by a major studio, surpassing even the biggest of blockbuster movies.
Many of the entries on this list will survive the test of time due to name recognition alone, or the loyalty of diehard fans refusing to let a good thing die. GTA will survive forever because of how much money it generates. It's a series with almost universal appeal; you can follow the main story, or you can strike out and just start mowing down pedestrians.
