15 Most Ridiculously Difficult Challenges In Final Fantasy History

5. Obtaining The Excalibur II (IX)

A typical Final Fantasy game can take anywhere from fifty to a hundred hours to properly finish when the likes of side-quests, grinding and general exploration are taken into account. Final Fantasy's IX toughest challenge laughed in the face of such a total and required players to reach a specific point in the game's final dungeon in twelve hours or less.

This allowed for an average of just three hours per each of the game's four discs and is largely considered impossible on anything other than Japanese or North American PS1 or PS2 consoles, as the European PAL format ran slightly slower and the PS3 forced the watching of each of the game's cinematics, which could be skipped on its predecessors by manually opening the disc tray.

Even on those every battle had to be avoided, every sidequest had to be skipped and every wasted second necessitated a reset to previous saves, which had to be few and far between given their time consumption.

The reward? A sword that was the most powerful in the game, though its wielder could easily land the maximum 9999 of damage per hit with lesser weapons.
