15 Most Ridiculously Difficult Challenges In Final Fantasy History
3. Perfecting The Veldt (VI)
The feral child Gau was something of a wildcard in Final Fantasy VI. His unique command, Rage, saw him emulate a chosen monster, gaining both their abilities and weaknesses/resistances. He became uncontrollable in this state.
253 total enemies could be channelled by Gau in total. The catch was that to make them selectable options, players had to first encounter them on the Veldt, a unique environment where any previously encountered enemy formation could appear.
The fact that several of the game's locations could not be revisited meant that many could be missed without realising. The addition of an in-game bestiary in remakes lessened this risk somewhat, but the fact that several enemies did not have bestiary entries but did have Rages was just cruel.
Annoyingly there were 2 Rages that were unobtainable in any release of the game, a result of the enemies in question only appearing in the Coliseum. As a result, it has always been impossible to get a 'perfect' Rage list. Given the general uselessness of Gau in comparison to other characters and the fact that there were hundreds of formation possibilities that could be encountered, few ever came close anyway.
