11. Detroit: Become Human
There's absolutely a conversation to be had around just how tone-deaf David Cage's approach to establishing context while connoting real world events is, but somehow Detroit: Become Human pulls it off.
Yes, the characters are walking cyphers that feel more like a high school thesis on "Why racism is bad" come to life, but dammit if the ludicrous production values, situations they get put in and story beat swerves don't still land.
You actually control three androids in this quasi-dystopian vision of the future. One's a cop hunting other "deviant" androids (those who deny their programming), another is a maid living with an abusive father/young daughter combo, and the third is a caretaker for an old, retired artist.
Naturally their worlds get thrown into disarray, crisscrossing over one another and being incredibly compelling if you just go with everything that's happening in a face value sense.
Apply any wider reading, historical associations or general academia and it falls apart VERY fast, but as "lalala, I'm not listening" narrative experience? This is right up there with Heavy Rain.
