6. Hollow Knight
You got me. Hollow Knight actually released on PC last year, but I'm including it here anyway, because it finally came to consoles in 2018. The Nintendo Switch, in fact.
Releasing in the middle of Nintendo's E3 conference, Hollow Knight takes just the right amount of cues from both Dark Souls and older 90s Metroidvanias. You've got the Souls-like currency/checkpoint system of accruing as many coins as possible away from a save point - before banking them at scattered intervals - and a Metroid-style descension of exploring as deep into the map as possible.
Buried within the depths of Hallownest you'll find bosses, helpful NPCs who prattle on inanely (another Soulsian trait), collectibles to open up new pathways, map markers, travel systems and enough coin to unlock new abilities.
The entire look of Hollow Knight is draped in this gothic cartoon sensibility - something that looks cute and macabre all at once. I completely fell in love with its design, and if you're anything of a seasoned gamer, it'll become a new firm favourite.
