16. Far Cry 5
Something of a swing and a miss as far as the game's attempt to frame a political message around its "What if militant right-wingers overtook the country?" setup, Far Cry 5 is still a time-tested set of mechanics created with the budget of a small island.
As such, nailing headshots, sliding along the ground and commanding a series of vehicles is still as present, correct and satisfying as in Far Cry 3 and 4, but where 5 goes the extra mile is Far Cry Arcade: A neat customisable suite of objects, layouts and level elements that lets the community design content in the most elaborate way possible.
For me, this is where the future of the franchise lies: Doing away with the arbitrary Lunatic Villain Who Kills Their Own Followers, and focusing on gameplay. Far Cry would be more at home with a mission design ethos and general pace that matches its combat's most frenetic moments, as the open-world setup we have right now means the gas gets let off whenever we're about to hit full speed.
Still, as Far Crys go, this is a mighty fine one.
