2. The Village Fight – Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil’s break from fixed camera angles and tank controls was risky, but after Resident Evil Zero proved there was no more life left in that style they had to make a change; or die trying. Resi 4 proved it could be done, and while some fans lament the change to a more action-focused approach most agree it was a stunning success.
The Village Fight early in the game proved this when Leon gets surrounded by some very unfriendly villagers, and has to desperately fight his way through them. The player runs into a house to take shelter, only for them to break down the door. You can kill a bunch of them, only for another wave to take their place.
It’s a breathless, terrifying setpiece that established that while the game was going to be different from the others, it was still going to freak you out in brand new ways.
