5 Things Fable Could Learn From Final Fantasy

2. Tactical Spells

One of the best parts of the original Fable was a magic system that catered to role-players.

Want to be a sneaky assassin? There's an ability to transport yourself fast behind your opponent while attacking them. Want to fire multiple arrows from your bow or summon ghost swords to defend you? Have at it. How about turning into a recognisable but legally distinguishable hulk of a man? That's catered to as well and it works amazingly well with a character that hasn't levelled any physical skills.

One of the worst parts of the Fable series was how the promise of that magic system was squandered in future titles until all spells became elemental damagers that were simpler to handle within the confines of co-op and the one-button combat system.

Final Fantasy also has direct damage spells, but goes beyond with abilities that affect resistances to physical and magical damage, or buff the amount the player can give out, raise and lower speed, or even reflect a magical attack back on the caster.

Allowing both the player and the enemies to control the battlefield like this can lead to incredibly tactical battles of wit and will.
