To continue the momentum from 2016's phenomenal DOOM reboot, Eternal fleshes out the world of the Doomslayer and his various antagonists' factions, until we have an entire cosmos that fears and respects him.
A large part of this is tucked away in optional text entries, describing for the majority of the game that there was a "being" who survived being tested in various gladiatorial combat trials, and who slaughtered all in his way.
Towards the end of the story you're shown the scene where DOOMguy was brought to the alien Makyrs, having been found exhausted on the outskirts of the city.
It's here where the item he's found with is revealed to be the original DOOM Marine's helmet, and the entire DOOM canon stitches itself together perfectly.
We can now say that the entirety of the DOOM story is focused on ONE individual. A soldier who went down into hell to stave off a demonic invasion, stayed there to make it so, lost their mind in the process and was dug up after being encased in stone, in 2016's game.
DOOM Eternal is the Slayer finally revisiting the place that made him such a battle-hardened warrior in between the older titles and the new, and it's a masterful hand to play from iD Software.
