The brave move by the creators to take on small-town America - the same one that got Donald Trump elected - can backfire if they fail to properly comment on the situation.
Some alt-right blogs and forums are already calling for a boycott of the game, even though they're clearly not the target. Conservatives might also have a hard time enjoying Far Cry 5 because of both the violence and religious symbolism.
The real problem will appear if Far Cry 5 fails to appeal to leftists/centrists/neoliberals/etc.
If the game fails expectations by presenting the Father as the source of violence in Hope County and not the symptom of a much bigger issue, for example, it'll be a huge disappointment. Granted, video games shouldn't serve as outlets to vent frustration through killing those on the opposing side of the political spectrum, but it's one of the selling points of Far Cry 5, and if it fails to deliver on that promise, Ubisoft may be in for an even more serious backlash.
