As everyone knows, open worlds are really the big thing in games right now. Everybody is doing it, from Rocksteady's Batman Arkham games to anything Ubisoft touches. XV, however, is the first Final Fantasy game to truly delve into the open world experience.

One of the biggest criticisms about Final Fantasy XIII was its linearity. At times, it really did feel like you were going down a big long corridor, simply battling foes as you went from one story event to the next. The solution? Open up FFXV completely at the start, giving the player free reign to explore this huge world.

XV does look truly massive too; you'll be using Noctis' car most of the time to traverse the environment, but you're free to jump out at any moment and explore the wilds. You can do this on foot, on a chocobo and - in some footage shown - even briefly commandeer a boat. Did I mention that you'll also get an upgrade which will allow Noctis' car to fly?

If you played Episode Duscae, a demo of XV which was released a couple of years ago, you'll have an idea of the exploration mechanics in XV. Sidequests are abundant across the world, monsters roam the plains, waiting to be fought, and there's even dungeons to be found where you'll no doubt find some sweet loot.

Did you hear recently that the end of the game is more linear than the start? Don't fret! The game's director has went on record as saying that is to finish off the story in a dramatic fashion and players are still free to go back to the open world environments if they wish.

Even if you don't do the sidequests, you're looking at 40+ hours of content. With sidequests, you'll push that up to around 100 hours of gameplay!
