Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs
3. Fun New Gimmick Modes
The beta also showcased many of Modern Warfare's new gimmicky modes, and while they won't be for all tastes, there's a welcome amount of diversity among them.
NVG mode sees players equipped with night-vision goggles as they battle the opposing team in near-darkness, creating a unique sense of urgency, even if the hyper-saturated visuals can often make it frustratingly tough to spot enemies. Still, a fun diversion all the same.
Then there's Gunfight, a 2v2 arena-type mode, where all players have the same starting weapon loadouts and can collect more advanced guns scattered around the map. Typically, rounds don't last long, and it's a neat addition that's destined to appeal to the hardcore shooter crowd.
Hardcore players may also love Realism mode, which strips the HUD away, heightens bullet damage and activates friendly fire. And finally, there's Cyber Attack, a new riff on Search and Destroy, where players can either wipe out the enemy team or plant an EMP device on their objective.
What separates it from S&D is the simple-but-brilliant revive mechanic, allowing players to bring their teammates back from the brink and keep the fight alive, albeit at the risk of being caught off-guard by an enemy.
While these modes probably won't strictly sell the game to many, they do represent a solid amount of added value in a game that's been dinged by fans for not featuring the traditional Zombies mode.
