Far Cry: Every Game Ranked Worst To Best
4. Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5 is a weird game.
From a pure mechanical standpoint it's undoubtedly the most refined in the entire franchise; the guns feel and sound amazing, the action is bombastic and the general loop of exploring is ace. However, regardless of how great it feels to play, you can never quite escape the fact that - despite the change in setting - you're not actually doing anything new.
The weapons are familiar, the skill trees are virtually identical and the general gameplay loop has remained unchanged since it was perfected in Far Cry 3. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, and it's certainly a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but it's a shame to see that the inspiration behind the radical change in setting didn't make its way over to the rest of this sequel's features.
Still, taken on its own merits, Far Cry 5 is incredible, built entirely around a gigantic, immersive North West USA setting. There isn't any one standout feature that leaves your jaw on the floor, but the gameplay is undeniably engaging, the environment so ripe for exploration and the villains so well portrayed that it's easy to lose yourself for hours on end.
