FIFA 22 Beta: 10 Hands-On First Impressions
1. It Won’t Convince The Doubters
FIFA 22 could be the hardcore fan's only choice this year.
PES, which has been renamed eFootball for good, is going down the free-to-play road. That means adjusting the gameplay sliders and replicating Konami's fresher camera angles could be the only compromise for those coming over from that series who don't like where it's headed.
Saying that, FIFA 22 is still very much FIFA. There are still bags of goals on default settings, defenders seem intent on losing their man rather than marking him, and last-minute equalisers/winners appear to be the law EA lives by. It's exciting and dramatic, sure, but it won't sway the purists who prioritise tactics and clean sheets over arcade-like goal feasts.
There's nothing in the Beta to suggest that EA plan on revolutionising their product. Those who adore it will continue to do so (and they'll appreciate the gameplay enhancements). Those who don't will continue to loathe. It's as simple as that.
