Is there ever fear quite like getting in the submarine in Final Fantasy VII, and seeing the monstrosity that is Emerald Weapon steaming towards you?

This cousin of the Ruby Weapon is fought actually underwater in FFVII, and like its counterpart, is also an optional superboss. Chances are most players first encounter him entirely by accident, and find themselves utterly decimated within seconds.

If you don't have the Underwater materia, Emerald Weapon gets even harder as the fight has a 20 minute time limit. It generally takes longer than this to actually beat the thing.

Emerald has access to a load of deadly attacks. The most feared is the Aire Tam Storm (did you know Airetam is materia backwards?), which hits your party for 1111 damage multiplied by the amount of materia equipped. Given that your max HP is 9999 and you could easily have 9 materia equipped, that's insta death for you!

Just to be more annoying, Emerald Weapon also likes to counterattack Knights of the Round with Aire Tam Storm too.

If you do manage to fell Emerald Weapon, you'll get yourself an Earth Harp, which you can trade for a Master Magic, Master Summon or Master Command materia in Kalm.
